Week 2: Beach Fun

This week we made a quick trip to see both of our families. Aaron’s mom had a retirement party thrown by her coworkers. It was held at an elementary school that had a fish pond and trees to climb so Ollie thought it was a rather great party.

We then drove down to Pflugerville to attend a memorial service for my great aunt. Ollie had fun exploring my mom’s whimsical front yard.

She just recently put up a green house and Ollie got to pick tomatoes and strawberries.

 Make it Monday

This was our first fail. I mean, nothing ever goes according to plan, but this was the first activity in which Ollie really didn’t have any interest in.

The goal

We already had the shells from last week’s activities and Ollie usually loves to sort and use glue.

This is as far as we got, and I glued the eye on because Ollie was already out of the room.

Take a Trip Tuesday

The schedule said to go to a beach. Considering the closest beach is over 9 hours away, we went a different route (literally).

Canyon has a water park we went a couple years ago with some friends. It has a lazy river, slides, and an area for little kids.

Same colors as a beach,  so close enough? I decided against giving Ollie the full experience of making him drink salt water and putting sand in his pants.

He decided to be afraid of the water sprinklers which were everywhere in the kid area. I tried sliding down one of the slides and showing. him how fun it was. I think he was finally building up some courage when the bucket on top dumped out a huge amount of water.

We did find a slide off to the side that was free of sprinklers and buckets and that was his choice of activities.

Of course his favorite part was playing with other kids. I asked him every once in a while if he wanted to try the other slides. One time he said okay and walked over to the big slides. And he was too small. Slides made for preschoolers? Terrifying. Slides that are 500 feet in the air? Goals.

Water Wednesday

It’s pretty funny today is called “Water Wednesday,” considering yesterday we actually got wet and today we played in sand.

The schedule said to build a sand castle and add water.

I knew Ollie would have so much fun with this since he was thoroughly entertained with the small amount of kinetic sand he got last week.

As you can see, he was into it. I suggested he sit off to the side so he had more room to build a castle. This is the method he preferred and kids know best when it comes to play, especially when mess is involved.

I also had Harper sit in it to feel the texture.

Ollie had fun making molds out of the bucket, but his favorite part was leveling them so I never got a good picture. I also taught him how to make tunnels in the sand. He let me build a moat at the end because I love following assignments.

Playing in the sand was something we did a lot as kids, so it was fun watching Ollie have fun with it, too.

Thinking Thursday

And we had another fail today. On the schedule was to look at seashells with a magnifying glass. I assumed he wouldn’t be too interested because he’s already been through a magnifying glass phase and is over the nuance of it.

So I planned on adding crayons rubbings and he humored me, but he was at grandmommy’s house and he was more into the freedom of running around outside with less supervision.

You can’t fault a kid for that.

Foodie Friday

The goal:

We actually did this one on a Friday while traveling from Midland to Pflugerville. There must be some rule that you can only see an object all the time until you need it. That was the case with drink umbrellas. I couldn’t find them anywhere!  I finally just used a cupcake liner. I know I’m going to start seeing them again.

It actually wasn’t as much of a disaster as it could have been to make a food snack in the car. We both spilled the fixings out of the pudding while making it, but it was easy to pick it up. I couldn’t find the toothpicks to hold the cupcake liner up, but it worked just leaning against the corner for the two seconds we put it on there. The most important thing was it kept us entertained which is very valuable on a long car ride.
