Both of my kids received many beautiful homemade blankets. Blankets as gifts are so special because they are hugs you can keep. Ollie still uses his blanket I wrapped him in whenever he first started sleeping in his bed.
I didn’t want the blankets just to get lost in the chaos of a kid’s room, so I came up with the idea of having a display cabinet for those blankets.
We found this cabinet at a garage sale and I knew it would be perfect for what I had in mind. Of course I didn't remember to take a picture before I started taking it apart to make it over.
I was heavily inspired by this cabinet from Hobby Lobby. I love the farmhouse antique look and I especially like how it looks like it was taken from a small town inn or bed and breakfast.
After doing some window shopping on Etsy, I decided to do a honey theme.
First, I did about a kajillion coats of off white paint
I found this adorable quilting fabric on Etsy. The seller actually lives in Round Rock, so I got to put a little bit of my home town in the project.
I also tried adding legs to plywood and attached it to the bottom. Let's just say it did not work the first time. They bent under the weight. I wanted a honey theme, but I did not want the legs to turn into the bee's knees.
I'll see myself out.
It was actually a simple solution. I just had to add some leg plates and it ended up being very sturdy.
I taped it behind the the window and used etching cream and wooden skewers to etch out the design on the glass.
Unfortunately, you couldn't see it. It looked pretty cool when you shined a light on it, as it casted the logo on the wall, but it wasn't exactly what my vision was.
Let’s all pretend these knobs are lined up.
And styled:
I added antique furniture wax to add some character. I'm not going to lie, it was pretty intimidating adding this onto the cabinet. I had three rules I followed: less is more, focus on the parts that stick out, and find the places that would he weathered through use, such as around the knobs.
To top it off, I added these cabinet knobs. Aren't they just adorable? They came from China, so they took a few weeks to get here. The cabinet was done for a week, sans these knobs. My nose was pressed against our storm door when I saw they were out for delivery.
Here’s a reminder of what it looked like before:
And styled:
This was a fun makeover! I love the whimsy of it and I learned some new techniques while trying it. I think it will be fun to get some honey/ bee themed antiques to put in there.
