Ultimate Summer: Week 2 Ocean

This week was a repeat of last year’s because we had so much fun with it.

Monday

We’ve been going to a different library for story time because our usual library has taken a little bit of a break. The library is doing a summer reading program with an ocean theme. We had so much fun doing the different activities that it took our whole morning.

I just read the sign that the pirates are only in the youth section. Also someone had to help us find the fifth one. It was a little bit of a struggle.

We made pirate hats but they weren’t Harper’s style.

Tuesday

I had bought the supplies to make slime and I did not get enough glue to make blue slime (per instructions) so we made black sparkly slime.

Ollie had so much fun playing with it.

We went to a fish store where the kids can feed the fish. I did attempt to let Harper feed them but she immediately tried to eat the feed (as expected) so we watched Ollie. It was really cool to compare much more interested Harper was in the fish than she was last year. I swear she and this puffer fish had some kind of special bond.

I was DETERMINED to make the slime right. Ollie was satisfied with the slime we already made but we got new color changing glue and made more.

Wednesday

I set up a water table with ocean themed trinkets like fish and shells.

Yes, I did find them matching swimsuits.

I found this comically small pool that Harper loves. They weren’t really interested in the water table, but Ollie had fun filling up Harper’s pool and Harper would say “cold!”

Saturday

Aaron’s parents came in to town the night before. Aaron was preaching Sunday and they are watching the kids while me and Aaron take an anniversary trip.

Our hospital hosted a carnival for NICU graduates. They had some fun games, face painting, and bounce houses so I think Ollie had the best time for all of us. It was really neat seeing all of Harper’s nurses again (in a different setting) and we told Ollie the whole carnival was for Granddaddy’s birthday.

There were some girls hula-hooping and I asked if they could show Ollie how to do that. They also built him an “igloo.”

I still haven’t been intentional with having a “teaching day.” We are reading an additional 15 minutes a day for the summer reading program at the library and Ollie picked out a non-fiction book. It had different features of animals and he had to guess what nose/ tail/ eye/ mouth/ hand/ feet belonged to what animal. It also described how each feature helped each animal. So I thought that was good enough.

Next week’s blog, I will be separated from the kids. I will cry the appropriate amount. But I’m still planning on blogging our adventures.
