Master bathroom

The master bathroom has gone through quite a journey. I feel like I say this about every room I have made over, but…

This was the most hated room of the house.

This is how it started. It had a built-in medicine cabinet that held the only light source, so the rest of the bathroom felt dark. It had carpet, popcorn ceilings, and a frosted door to the corner shower which blocked out a lot of light.

While very functional, the cabinet above the toilet made the already small bathroom feel even smaller and darker. Also, the color scheme of the bathroom was yellow and brown, and… well I just don’t think that’s a good color scheme for a bathroom. Maybe too “on theme” if you know what I mean.

This project has been a four year process, and what a long strange journey it’s been.

First, I replaced the carpet with tile. This was my very first tiling job, so I had a lot to learn. I should’ve rented a more legit tile-cutter, because the one we bought could not handle the angled cuts.

Next, I took out the medicine cabinet and put the light source in the center of the bathroom. I chose a light fixture with adjustable heads I could direct to different angles of the bathroom. (Something similar to the above picture).

Back to the floor tile. A couple years go by, and I had been really liking the idea of either penny tile or hexagon tile in the bathrooms. I think it’s a really classic look and I was thinking about ordering some from Amazon every month until I had the amount I needed.

I happened to find this black hexagon tile on clearance and immediately snatched it. I wasn’t exactly planning on black, but I think it’s unexpected and a bit of a modern twist.

As you can also see, the exterior tile from the shower was falling apart so I replaced that with different tile I had also found on clearance in Lowes. (I did not take progress pictures of either).

I then painted the interior shower tile and the countertop white.

The latest step is the vanity. I actually did document this well, but I’m trying to keep this post short and sweet and not the next great American novel.

This was the inspiration. I already had the black tile and white countertop, but the vanity was too dark.

I used paint strip, which did nothing, sanded it, but couldn’t get an even color.

So my handy assistant primed it. I stained it using Golden Pecan, and it came out too pink. I wanted to settle and live with it, but it was so patchy. So I sanded everything again. I worked really hard to make sure everything was even, stained it with Golden Oak, and…

PATCHY!

My next plan was to find a paint color that looked like wood and paint it. My husband, who has not had to lift one finger throughout this whole process but was tired of it anyway, said I just needed to love my vanity for who it was.

I gave it one more college try.  Using some paint stripper and a wire brush, I scrubbed the whole thing down. I also took a rag and made sure to get all the residue off.

It’s finally to a place where I am happy with it.

I’m so happy I finally have the master bathroom (mostly) done. It was such a neglected room. I just want my house to feel cozy. L

I still plan on putting baseboards down, trim around the window and putting contact paper on the inside of the vanity for a pop of color.
