Hill to DIY on: Harper's Room Part 2

Harper's room is getting closer and closer to being done. We still have a couple of things we need to get, but I am so happy with how it is looking. It has turned out so whimsical.

This post is dedicated to six DIY Pinterest/Etsy inspired projects:

1. Toy Cabinet

One thing to know about me is I am a sucker for deals, especially if they are free. About a year-and-a-half ago, I found this chest of drawers sitting next to our dumpster. Okay, it didn't have drawers, so I guess it's a chest. An open-faced chest.

I just knew I could do something with it. Well, it sat in our guest room with the rest of the stuff I didn't know what to do with until I came across this image.

One of the first things I did was take out every other drawer support and cut up some scrap wood to turn this into shelves.

I sanded down and painted the outside the same white as the accent wall and dry brushed the inside to 1) make it more cohesive 2) give it a rustic look that I knew would look good with the accent wall.

I also ordered baskets to store toys in quickly. I am really pleased with how it turned out. This was a simple transformation, but I think it will meet our needs/ it looks really nice in the nursery.

We added a shelf above so we could display Aaron's old ship clock. Not only does it remind me of Peter Pan, but it increases the whimsy of this room so much.

Baskets were purchased at Target: 13" coiled rope basket, 13" coiled rope basket small
I also bought a blanket basket from Amazon that matches those baskets pretty well.

2) Chest of Drawer makeover

I kept looking at Facebook marketplace for dressers/ chest of drawers. Sometimes you have to be quick because the really good deals get snatched up quickly, which kept happening to me. Or sometimes I would ask for the dimensions/ or even a general idea of the dimensions and get no response. One time someone told me they didn't want to bother looking and someone else told me that it could fit two kids. I didn't pursue either.

I finally found a dresser for $10. Here is a very blurry picture of it. They deleted the listing after they sold it to me, so the picture from the messages is the best I could find. I sent Aaron over there before someone else could claim it and it was exactly the size we needed.

This makeover was really easy. It was spray painted black, so it was very easy to sand. It took two coats of primer and two coats of the same white I used for the accent wall. The handles were purchased from Walmart.

The difference is black and white.

3) Window makeover

I do not know what happened, but I can not find any pictures of the window makeover process. Here is a picture of Ollie's window to give you and idea of what it looked like before.

I went through a very similar process in framing the window as I did in the bathroom makeover. I just made it a little simpler. Here is the tutorial I used for that.

For the curtains, I found a good sale at Joann's of this pretty pink flannel material that I couldn't pass up. I thought it would complement the accent wall nicely. I actually sewed them this time, which I was told is a good project for beginner sewers.

I was inspired by these curtains and knew I needed to include tassels on Harper's.

Lastly, I made a point to hang the curtains high and wide. It makes the window appear larger and adds interest to the wall.

4) Book Mobile

I made a mobile for Ollie's nursery before he was born and I wanted to do the same for Harper. My goal was to have it be a storybook theme, since that's the theme I want for her room. I wasn't coming up with a lot of options, besides a couple specific ones.

I really liked the book base of this Harry Potter mobile and I thought the book page flowers mobile would be a great idea of combining the storybook theme with the floral accent wall.

One of the first things I needed to do was figure out how to keep the book closed upside down. I had a practice book that I did some testing on and finally came up with the solution of nailing most of the pages down and then gluing the top pages on top.

Yes, this book nerd's soul died just a little bit destroying a book

To make the flowers you simply cut a spiral out of a page, roll it up, and glue the end, and then you take an hour long nap because all my energy goes into creating a very active baby girl. I ended up gluing some flowers on the actual page because I discovered there were curse words which eventually my children will be able to read and I don't want to be the one responsible for teaching them those words. Here is a less-scatterbrained, more focused tutorial.

I also found a tutorial to make miniature books for dolls. It comes with a free printable. I selected a few of the covers and expanded them by a couple inches. I cut some of the pages from the book I was testing and glued it into the covers.

I connected the flowers and books to the base book with fishing line. If you do this, as soon as your fishing line gets tangled untangle it. Do not wait until you think you are done because you will spend an hour trying not to lose it over the idea of potentially starting this craft over because it is all one tangled mess.

5) Wired-Letter sign

This is one of those that I am mainly happy with. I saw this "Once Upon a Time" sign for sale on Pinterest and I knew I would be able to find a tutorial for it. It's a very simple project.

Essentially, you print out the phrase you want and then bend utility wire to the letters.

Here is the tutorial.

6) Book art

I was inspired by this picture and just knew I had to recreate that somehow.

This was a very simple project, but the first thing I did was look at lists of good book quotes. It almost ended up being a Little Women themed nursery because there are so many amazing quotes. I ended up with a list of about 20-25 from different books and had Aaron pick five he liked.

“Take some books and read; that’s an immense help; and books are always good company if you have the right sort.” ― Louisa May Alcott, Little

“It's delightful when your imaginations come true, isn't it?”― L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

“Let us go on and take the adventures that shall fall to us.” ― C.S. Lewis, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe

"I shall find out thousands and thousands of things." ― Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden

"On the night you were born, the moon smiled with such wonder that the stars peeked in to see you and the night wind whispered, 'Life will never be the same." - Nancy Tillman, On the Night You Were Born.”

I found illustrations that went with each quote and that looked like they could go together as well.

I will be putting the before and after pictures on my Facebook page so be looking for those!
