Under the Sea

I found this awesome ready- made summer schedule for kids. Each week comes with a theme and each day has an activity that goes with that theme: Make it Monday, Take a Trip Tuesday, Water Wednesday, Thinking Thursday, Foodie Friday. Schedules and alliteration? This author could definitely be my best friend.

My goal for following this is to create memories and bond with Ollie. So, if things don’t go according to plan, that’s okay. (Definitely something I have to repeat to myself). Of course it’s good for Harper because she gets exposed to vocabulary and she’s just happy to be in the same room as everyone.

The first week’s theme is Under the Sea

Make it Monday

The goal:

Aren’t these cute? Well our’s didn’t turn out like that. We didn’t have the ingredients listed, so we had to make slime with baking soda and dawn soap. We added food dye and glitter (that was Ollie’s favorite part).

Things quickly took a turn for the worst when I had the brilliant idea to add star sprinkles.

I ran out of baking soda and no other ingredients to make slime so we found this alternative.

We put water, food dye, glitter, and olive oil (only oil we had) in a mason jar. We made sea creature shrinky-dinks using an old to-go box. I accidentally gave Ollie food dye instead of glitter so the water turned out darker than we were expecting.

Ollie had a great time doing this. He still likes picking up the jar and shaking it. It was very reminiscent of when I was a little girl and would make potions in my bathroom and combine all the shampoo and soap.

Take a Trip Tuesday

The schedule said to go to an aquarium. Because Amarillo doesn’t have one, we went to Fish Pros. It’s a tropical fish store and I was not expecting for it to be as fun as it is! They have both a koi and turtle pond. There’s little candy dispensers you can get fish food out of to feed them.*Ollie would have been there all day if we didn’t run out of quarters.

I was very grateful he preferred the koi pond. We were feeding the turtles and I was just admiring my son and what a fun mini- adventure we were on. I almost fell over when I looked over and saw a turtle the size of the Loch Ness monster rose from the depths and land right next to my arm. Trying to not panic my son I told him maybe not to get his fingers so close to the pond as calmly as I could as my heart was trying to pound its way out of my chest.

A jokester next to us bent his finger and said “yeah! Look what they did to me!”

The back of the store had snakes, lizards, crocodiles, birds, and lemurs to look at. I think Ollie and I were trying to be brave for each other, but it was dark and the snakes were too aware of our presence. We liked the lemurs and birds but Ollie said “let’s get out of here!”

I think Ollie would recommend this place (maybe not the back), especially if you have plenty of quarters.

Water Wednesday

Today’s activity was a sensory bin. It was a super easy set-up and Ollie had a lot of fun with it.

He spent forty-five minutes scooping the shells and spangles, twenty minutes playing with kinetic sand, and our activity of throwing water at the dog (the dog enjoyed it) got interrupted by us getting ready for church.

This was absolutely an Ollie-approved activity.

Thinking Thursday

Today we did a science experiment with vinegar and baking soda. We made a paste with baking soda, water, and yellow food dye and put it in a seahorse ice pop mold. After a couple of hours in the freezer, we took it out of the molds.

Ollie used a syringe of dyed vinegar and squirted it to create a fizzy reaction.

Ollie had fun with this, but he was more impressed with actually using the syringe than the actual fizzy reaction. In fact, after we ran out of vinegar, he was content just playing with water. He did make a discovery that blue and yellow make green so that’s a win. I liked it because it was a low energy level activity, which was good timing since we had a birthday party earlier that day.

Foodie Friday

Hence forth, we are changing “Foodie Friday” to “Scrumptious Saturday.” Aaron has special days with the kids on Fridays. Plus, we have done baking videos on Saturdays for over a year. I also changed the dessert just to be more involved, and boy was it involved.

This was the goal

Super cute!

And this is how it went.

We had fun, and they were tasty anyhow.

Ollie was a fan of every ingredient that went in it. I’m still finding red candy melt all over my house.

This was a fun week. It’s giving us opportunities to try new things and I really feel like me and Ollie are bonding. Next week’s theme is the beach.
