How exciting is it that we can start getting out of our houses and doing fun things again! Aaron looked in his email this morning and saw that the local minor league baseball kids club that we signed Ollie up for was passing out t-shirts and hot dogs.
We just assumed we would eat hot dogs and go home, but when we got there, there was a baseball game going on between two college teams.
Ollie was good at sitting for a few innings, but he started getting restless. I saw kids rolling around on the right field berm and thought that would be perfect for Ollie.
I stood at the top while Ollie watched other kids roll down the hill and he tried it a couple of times, but then he thought his time was better spent by introducing himself to other kids there. There was a family there with a boy about Ollie’s age with cute red hair. Ollie went up to him and said “hi, my name is Ollie. What’s your name?”
They ran around and Ollie would talk to the family about playing and running around. He heard the little boy got hurt so he said he hurt, too. The mom asked if he got hurt from running too fast. Ollie agreed and started running his special toddler run. You know, where they run with their bellies out and their hands almost behind their backs.
I am going to miss that run.
Ollie ran to some other boys who were older than him and introduced himself. The boys were so sweet and played with him. Ollie would tell them to run! And the boys would run. Ollie would say “red means stop!” And the boys would stop.
It was so cute seeing Ollie boss these boys around the berm. He then would direct them over to the family and introduce them to the family. He would say come friends! Or go to the family and say “these are my friends.” Sometimes he would point to me and say “that’s mommy!”
This kid had the time of his life. He loves playing with other kids. The older boys had cups they were drinking from and Ollie wanted to drink something too so we went back to dad.
It was a good excuse because I’m pretty sure Ollie would have been perfectly content playing with his ballpark friends all day.
I just love how pure and sweet Ollie is. I have discovered that I both mourn and celebrate every stage he is in. I was so sad when he wasn’t my baby anymore, but he has been such a fun toddler. He is only a few months away from being a preschooler. And while I mourn losing my toddler, I am so excited to see him grow and develop more and more into (I’m hoping) a godly man who is just as friendly as sweet as he is now.
