1.kitchen sink leak
Our kitchen sink had a small leak that I easily repaired using pipe thread sealant tape. We already had the tape on hand and it took maybe five minutes (including organizing all the cleaning supplies under the sink). I don’t even want to discuss how long I put this project off. I need the dice!
2.crown molding
In my dreams about what I wanted my house to look like, it included crown molding. After a ton of research, I decided it wasn’t in the cards for us to have it in every room. Two years ago, I had managed to put crown molding in the surround of my kitchen, but it had a lot of flaws.
It’s extremely difficult to cut in the exact angle you need for corners, so I ordered pieces. I wasn’t able to hide the seems and it just looked really patchy. I also want my house to look cohesive, so it just didn’t make since to only have it in one room of the house.
I left the molding around the cabinets and put some around my closet wardrobe.
3. Countertop storage bathroom
Can you believe it’s been three-and-a-half years since I made over the guest bathroom?
I used leftover wood from when I took the cabinet down and used it as the countertop. Although it really doesn’t come in contact with a lot of water, sometimes soaps and shampoo is set on it. I needed something a little easier to clean.
I found some laminate adhesive liner at a thrift store several months ago that complements the sink countertop. Super simple, but I think it turned out really nice. I think it’s really hard to see the seems.
I also added some trim just to close any gaps.
4. Paint hutch
Over a year ago I found this hutch at a thrift store. I successfully hung the top part on my wall and told everyone about it on instagram.
I also painted my piano at some point to match Joanna Gaines’ piano. I thought that using the same color on the hutch would help bring a fun quirky color into my house as well as bring some color from the living room to the dining room.
Unfortunately, I must have had the color specially made because the can that held the paint contained no information on the name of it and the freeze congealed the paint, making it useless. I took it to Home Depot, had them color match it, after wasting hours upon hours of trying to figure out the paint color on her piano.
The whole time I was painting I was chanting “Trust the process! Trust the process!” because there was a lot of doubt.
I ended up liking it! I added some antique wax to it to match the piano and to bring out some details. Again I was chanting “Trust the process! Trust the process!”
With antique wax you brush it on and then swipe away as much of it as you want. This was right when I brushed it on and was slightly panicking.
I also added the same wallpaper from the island bookcase to tie those two pieces of furniture together.
And of course, if I have an excuse, I will get new cabinet knobs, apparently.
This is the “instagram version.”
This is the “reality version” with Starbucks bags out and Ollie’s lab table right next to it. We have so much science paraphernalia scattered around the dining area, we might as well name it “Menlo Park.”
5. Master shower tile
I ordered some peel and stick tile from Lowe’s.
It didn’t take me long (maybe about two minutes after I put them up) to figure out I needed a stronger adhesive than what was on the back of the tile, so I used contact cement. It forced me to open my bathroom window and enjoy the sound of rain.
Green, surprisingly, isn’t my favorite color. But I think I need to just accept it because I’m loving the addition of green throughout my house.
Look at how well they match the mirror!
