Hill to DIY On... Ollie’s Room

This is my first home renovation blog and it starts with Ollie’s room. It’s definitely been the easiest, and the only one I didn’t paint two times because I didn’t like the color.

We officially moved to Amarillo June 2018. That’s when we got the keys to our house. I wanted Ollie to have as smooth of a transition as possible, so his room was our first priority to makeover. I wanted it to look just like it did in Seagraves. So we painted it the same and just moved his decorations over. Maybe because renovations puts your stamp on something, or maybe it’s because Ollie’s room looks just like it did in Seagraves, but our house became a home after making over this room.

I didn’t think to take before pictures, and the real estate agency didn’t have any pictures of his room either, so here is a screenshot I took of a video I did when I gave a tour of our house for a YouTube video. Yes I attempted youtube. No I don’t want to talk about it. *

I should honestly submit these to Bigfoot Research Society. These would fit their portfolio.**

Ollie slept in the guest room in his pack-n-play while we painted and set up everything in his room for a couple of days. Of course, this is the time of year the is the busiest for moving companies, so it was taking a week or two longer to get our stuff. Aaron and I moved some of the basics, slept on a mattress on the floor, and had our clothes in suitcases. There’s something so fun about anticipating all the possibilities of your life in your new home and city.

I’m going to show pictures of what I did to his nursery in Seagraves, because I took better pictures, but I will be talking about what we did in Amarillo.

I did have to paint the trim and doors white, because they were dark brown. Coincidentally, we had a gallon of paint mixed up to match the white paint in the house of Seagraves, so the trim is the exact same color. The blue color is Glidden diamond Lagoon Green. It made the room so much brighter  than what was on the walls

One thing that I am really proud of is the mobile I made for Ollie. Mobiles can be very expensive, so I took ideas from Pinterest and Etsy and made my own. I don’t have original ideas. Everything I have ever done is because of Pinterest: cooking, teaching, DIYing, mommying...

If you can’t tell, his room is vintage baseball, and I thought the mobile was not only something interesting for Ollie to look at while he’s being changed, but it also adds to the theme of the room.

All that was involved were eyelet screws, fishing line, mini baseball bats, and mini baseballs.  It’s a simple project in concept, but I had to get help from Aaron to screw in the eyelet screws to the baseball bats.

My mom loves antique shopping, so she and I went on the hunt for a bunch of baseball- themed items to display.

We found a couple of magazines that had baseball articles, so I cut one article out and framed it and the VFW picture is just a framed magazine. The baseball bat and glove were also found at the antique mall in Austin*** and I just love how well-loved it is. Looks like it came off the set of the Sandlot.

We got the baseball lamp and light switch cover ( not pictured) from Hobby Lobby. It would have been easier to just go with vintage sports, but I’m really glad we stayed with baseball. I just like the overall look. IKEA came through with all the furniture and curtains.

I was really wanting to put a room together that could grow with Ollie and not need too much change.    We no longer have the changing table or rocking chair in there.  I moved the rocking chair out because Ollie kept climbing on it to turn on the lights, while he was supposed to be napping. He managed to do it without the chair so I had to unscrew the lightbulbs.

We moved the toys to his closet (AKA clubhouse) and moved his chest of drawers to his room once his crib was converted to a toddler bed.

His room is the only room that still has popcorn on the ceiling. I try not to let the renovations affect him too much and we didn’t remove the popcorn ceilings until much later. I don’t want to make him move rooms because its extremely messy and takes a while to clean up.

I also should have sanded the doors and trim because the paint is peeling off. So, I need to go back over those.
