Mepak is a Serbian word which means pleasure derived from simple joys, and I feel like that is my new favorite word and is the perfect word to describe this weekend. It was just one of those weekends where Aaron and I just realized how content we are living in Amarillo.
Friday we had a valentines party for the two and under crowd. We talked to Ollie before hand about them coming over and that he needed to be a good friend and share his toys. He did great! He let me and Aaron hold the babies without being jealous and held hands with his best friend from the nursery at church and brought her toys.
A couple of weeks ago, the library offered free family portraits in honor of Shirley Jackson. Well, we signed up too late. But, so many people were interested that they offered another weekend. I was so excited because I have been really wanting to do an annual family photo session.
The session was so easy and we got a couple of good pictures out of it. I was slightly disappointed they weren't the cheesy '90's photos of floating heads.*
We went to the zoo afterward, which had a valentines theme. Some of the enclosures were decorated with streamers and paper cupcakes and the lions were given heart shaped meat patties. We saw one of the lionesses attack the cupcake and saw her disappointment when it was empty** Ollie was really into the animals and said hi to all of them.
However, he wasn't as excited as Aaron and I were to see the tigers come out. We kept having to convince him to stay. We kept telling him how cool it would be and that they are the same animals as Daniel Tiger. And then when the tigers did come out, it was pretty anticlimactic as they weren't as interested in the cupcakes as the lions were and then just laid down.
We then headed over to our favorite barbecue place. I overheard someone in line who was from out of state say they were trying Texas barbecue for the first time and I was feeling all the pressure even though I had nothing to do with the cooking of the food or the restaurant. But, Texas pride! Yeehaw!
We ended the day walking to the park and Ollie had so much fun. There were so many kids and dogs. We hadn't been in a while so Ollie had to be reminded how to climb a couple of things. It was so much fun to watch him and Aaron play.
I tried to find another fun foreign word for being so happy with the man you have married and being so amazed with what a great father he is. But when I googled it, all the websites were about how to save my marriage, which wasn't what I needed at the time.
So I will end this blog by wishing you a mepak week.***
*Business idea: intentional awkward family photo studio.
** Like that one time I bought a pinata for a friend and didn't realize it didn't come with candy. I think about that often.
*** I'm most likely not using that right, but google keeps thinking I mean the word "meek."
