Hill to DIY On: Closet Wardrobe Part 1

This project is sponsored by my neighbors, whether they realize it or not. Several months ago they were throwing away an old playscape and I jumped on it, without having a plan on what I wanted to do with it. Lumber is expensive, so I will put my greedy trash panda hands on any salvageable pieces I can find.

I found this post on Pinterest where this couple built a closet wardrobe from scratch and it was way cheaper than built in IKEA Pax systems I’ve seen a lot of people do.

The first thing I did was lay down a base and put a support board at the top of the wall. Why yes, it was scary cutting up that carpet.

I needed Aaron’s help with this one. Our $20 drill is no match for studs, or anything really. It’s more there for moral support.

Here are some comparison photos between the progress of the original’s project and mine.

I added extra support in the middle to help with the strength.

Everything, except the plywood are salvaged either from the neighbor’s playscape, or from previous projects. The outside white frame is made from old door posts from when I made over the doorways into arches. Each section is about three feet across and two feet in depth.

Next, I worked on the functionality of the wardrobe by adding closet rods (made from PVC pipes and closet rod pocket sets) and shelves (made from plywood and lattice). I cut up shoe shelves that came with our closet when we moved in to fit into this wardrobe closet.

This took three weeks to build, and every day I was so surprised with how exhausted I was after working on it. I am so excited to  move on to the next part, which is to make it pretty!

Aaron, I’m sure, is looking forward to the part where I put our room back together. We currently have a mote of clutter and sweaters surrounding our bed, waiting to be organized.
