Week 5: space

After weeks of traveling and youth camp and VBS, we were desperate for our old routine. Ollie was very peopled-out and we needed to just stay at home. Of course, Ollie turned 4 this week, so birthday parties were the exception to our nothing exciting rule.

Take a Trip Monday

My mom was in town so we went to the science museum. I took Ollie to the space displays first, since that was our theme. It wasn’t really his age interest, so we didn’t last very long.

At this display, kids follow a checklist to make a space ship and then test it out.

He had fun with the rest of the museum. I keep trying to pick which one was probably his favorite. Between the construction machines, bubbles, and the area specifically designated for kids six and younger, it’s hard to decide.

This was Harper’s favorite display.

Make it Tuesday

For crafts not being Ollie’s preferred activity, this one was pretty fun for him.

The goal:

Ollie liked painting and really liked dumping glitter all over the plates.

I found a “Marvin the Martian” toy that came with a spaceship and “gum” (gun).

Ollie calls the ship we made the house and the ship that came with Marvin the Martian his car and also an alien.

Water Wednesday

We made moon moon mud! There are a lot of recipes, but the one we used was 16 oz kinetic sand, 24 oz corn starch, and 3 cups of water. The combination turns into an oobleck!

If you’re not familiar with what that is, it’s where it acts like a liquid until you add force, and then it acts like a solid.

It was pretty bizarre watching it run and then pick it up and it feels like dry cornstarch. I was trying to understand it much like Harper is trying to understand her hand.

Thinking Thursday

So this one was supposed to teach about the different phases of the moon. I think it’s a really good idea, that I will implement if I ever teach that subject again, but y'all, I struggled. I initially made the moon too big so I could only include 4 phases.

So I tried again, and I don’t know what happened. I mean I do. Aaron asked if we wanted to go to Texas Roadhouse after I’ve been hinting wanting to go for a couple weeks. Anyway, I rushed and did not have the moon phases in order.

Ollie had fun with it for about a minute.

Foodie Friday

One of the books we got from the library had a recipe in the back that we used. Logically I had Ollie do a “reading Rainbow” review and then I downloaded an app to convert YouTube videos into mp3s so I could add that 3 seconds of sound they always have at the end of reviews

You know, because I like to put a lot of work into things that don’t matter and no one cares about.

Books on Theme

I’m not sure why I didn’t think to add this but here’s books we got to go with the space theme:

Otter in Space by Sam Garton (so cute)

Zoom Rocket Zoom by Margaret Mayo

Pluto Visits Earth! By Steve Metzger

Daddy, Me, and the Magic Hour by Laura Krause Melmed

The Moon Might Be Milk by Lisa Shulman (has the recipe)
